Hot Right Now: How to Choose the Best Blue Eyeshadow for You

If there was one colour which was all over the catwalks for summer 2016, it was blue.  All different shades of blue on everything from nails, eyes and lips (yes, you read right - lips!).  It's by far the trendiest look in town and a must-try makeup look for this season.

Blue shadow is one of the easiest ways to quickly update your look this summer - and can be incredibly flattering if applied correctly. But my guess is that you may be a little scared of giving it a try. How many blue eyed clowns have you seen out there and are afraid of looking the same? It turns out that by doing something as simple as matching your eye colour shade to your skin tone can make all the difference to looking either glam or grunge gone wrong.

Skin tones are not the same as skin colour. Whether you have a light, medium, olive or dark skin you will have one of three skin undertones - either a cool 'pink/red/blue' tone, a warm 'golden/yellow/olive' one or a 'neutral' tone.

If you are unsure about your skin tone, one of the easiest ways to see which one you are is to check the veins on the inside of your wrist - preferably in natural light. If they have a blue tinge tending towards purple, then you have a cool undertone. Do they look slightly green? If so, you are warm. If you can't quite decide and your veins seem to be a mix of blue and green, then you are more than likely a neutral.

The trick is to match the undertone of your skin to the eyeshadow hue. If the shade is more yellow in tone, it is best suited to warmer skinned beauties. And if it has a pink/red tone the it would be perfect for cool undertones. Neutrals can shift either way and also often pull off dramatic looks more easily because of the chameleon nature of their skin.

Pantone, one of the world's leading authorities on colour, included three gorgeous blue tones as part of their summer palette - Limpet Shell, Snorkel Blue and Serenity. Each of these shades is perfectly suited to either warm, cool or neutral skin tones - find out which one is for you.

Warm - Yellow/Gold Skin Tones

One of the easiest ways to wear a brighter shade on your eyes is sweep a single colour across your lids, and then vamp it up with a simple cats' eye. Try Essence The Velvets Eyeshadow - Bahama Mama for a gorgeous aqua daytime look. Or if you are not sold on shadow covering your entire lid then experiment with Catrice Kohl Kajal - My Dream of Caribbean, for a bold line of colour on top and bottom lash lines.

For a sophisticated twist on the smoky eye, use Almay Intense i Color - Evening Smoky, for a pop of colour on the inner part of your eye blending into a deep smoky finish on the top and bottom outer edges.

And for those who are more adventurous and totally in love with this season's rainbow eye trend, Palladio has a delicious candy toned palette, Pop Idol, which blends the seasons aqua with purple and a bold lime.

Neutral Skin Tones

You lucky neutral skin tone beauties can wear a variety of shades as their skin tone can go either way - warm or cool.

Try a dramatic blue smoky eye look with Palladio's Silk FX Eyeshadow Palette Mystique palette. Build the look with a wash of blue over the lid and use the darker shades to blend in the smoky look on the outer corners of your eyes. Finish off with highlights on the inner corners of your eyes and under the brow bones.

Or try a little adventure with a deep jewel toned azure blue all over the lid. Experiment with L'Oreal Color Riche Ombre Pop in Big Blue or Rimmel Magnif'Eyes Mono Eyeshadow in Magnetic Blue.

If you are not sold on the idea of dark blue lids, break out and try a stunning deep blue liner on top and bottom lashes. Maybelline Master Kajal Kohl Liner in Lapis Blue is a good option to achieve this look.

Cool - Pink/Blue Skin Tones

Those with rosy, pink or red/blue undertones are complemented best by sky blue and midnight blue shades. So they can also wear this seasons looks for neutral skin tones.

L'Oreal Color Riche Les Ombres Eyeshadow - Bleu Mariniere is a good choice for this skin tone. Sweep the light blue over the entire lid and then accent the outer corners with the darker shades for a dramatic smoky eye look.

For those who want a little less blue drama, try a wash of colour over the lids and under the lower lash line with either Catrice Absolute Eye Mono Shadow - The Big Blue Theory or Essence Mono Eyeshadow - Billie Jeans. Finish off with a simple cats' eye and lots of lashes (another big trend this summer).

Or for a touch of the rainbow eye trend, be a little adventurous and pair your blue shadow wash with a gorgeous lilac cats' eye. Our favourite - Revlon Colorstay Eyeliner in Amethyst.
