Pretty Pastels Are About to Be Your New Summer Makeup Obsession

22 Aug, 2017
By Andie Reeves
As we shift from chilly winter to crisp and cool spring time our make up routine tends to change from bold and dramatic to something a bit lighter and fresher to suit the weather. It's time to pack away your palette of smoky browns and heavy eyeliner because this summer/spring is all about wearing the rainbow on your lids.

The trend of wearing a simple slick of colour on your eyelids is everywhere from the red carpet to Pinterest right now. The key shades are anything as long as it's a bold pastel tone, like lilac, orange, pink, blue or yellow. In terms of application we are simply covering our lids in a pop of colour and following with a quick slick of mascara.

The end result is simple, clean and fun (and a little attention-grabbing!). Keep the rest of your look laid-back (think glowing, dewy skin, nude lips and an elegantly bold brow) to let your eyes steal the show.

Because this trend isn’t about one colour in particular, but rather the whole rainbow of pretty pastel tones, there is a shade to suit everyone. It’s a good idea to have a few colours of the rainbow on hand this season to suit any occasion and any outfit.

The multi-toned LA Girl Beauty Brick Eyeshadow Palette in Neons is perfect if you want to play with a lot of these looks but the budget doesn’t quite stretch to a whole bunch of different single shadows...

Pretty Pinks

Pink, specifically the dusty shade referred to as 'millennial pink' has been having a moment for a while now, and it doesn't look like this pretty, suits-everyone shade is going anywhere any time soon.

Pair your pink look with a bare and matte face, but go bold with your lashes by using a volumising mascara to avoid your pink eyes looking like you've got, well, pink eye. Pink looks great with an all-white outfit (another very on-trend look) and/or pops of green.

Our product picks: Catrice Absolute Eye Colour in Vin-Touch Of Rose and Essence The Metals Eyeshadow in Rose Razzle Dazzle.

Oh, My Orange

Orange is like the Marmite of the colour world; you either love it or you hate it. This spring we recommend you start loving it, because the shade suits most and gives a nod to both the rainbow eyes trend and the 70s look that is still going strong.

Go with whatever you feel suits you, be it super bold or a more subtle shade of pastel, and remember to use a blush with a touch of orange in it to avoid any clashing (match it with your eyes to rock the monochromatic look).

Our product picks: Essence Mosaic Blush in Miss Floral Coral and Michelle Ori Dipping Eyeshadow in Gold.

Lilac Lush

This more gentle version of purple will suit most skin tones. Be sure to test out a few variations before you pick the one. You need a shade of lilac that actually lifts your look and doesn't just look like bruising or discolouration on your skin.

When it comes to choosing your outfit remember that lilac looks amazing with grey tones, and if you have brown eyes it will make them pop.

Our product picks: Revlon Colorstay Creme Eye Shadow in Black Currant and Clarins
Eye Quartet in Violet.

Lemon Drizzle

This happy colour looks amazing on dark skin as it really pops (if you're pale it might just make you look sick, sorry!).

A solid slick of yellow from your lids all the way to your brows with nothing more than a layer of mascara is a killer look for a daytime affair if you want to be raking in the compliments all day. Wear white or blue clothing with this look for extra oomph.

Our product picks: Revlon Colorstay Creme Eyeshadow in Honey and Yardley Stayfast Eyeshadow Stick in Gilded.

Breezy Blues

Blue eye shadow is notoriously tricky to pull off. There's a fine line between looking simply dolled up and looking like you're going to a dress up party.

This season's pastel shade will look good on anyone as long as they pair it with a light layer of mascara, minimal other make up, plus clothes in warm shades like red, orange or pink.

Our product picks: Essence The Metals Eyeshadow in Deep Sea Shimmer and Michelle Ori Dipping Eyeshadow in Light Blue.

Go For Green

This colour is a little harder to pull off, but if you've got cool undertones or olive skin then it will blend perfectly with your skin tone. Green hues are best suited to brown eyes or any other colour with a green fleck - like hazel, blue or grey.

Dust some green shadow on your lids and follow with black mascara, to keep the look fresh and not sickly.

Our product picks: Catrice Prêt-à-Lumière Longlasting Eyeshadow in Petit Green and Catrice Absolute Eye Colour in My Mermint.

Sunset Shades

Match your eyes to the weather by combining reds, yellows and oranges on your lids. Use the same technique you do to create a smoky eye, but use fiery shades instead of neutral browns.

Mimic the setting sun by lining your whole lid with a deep red and blending it into a lighter orange towards your brow bone. Or ring the changes by copying one of the runways major looks by pairing a cool blue and red.

Our product picks: Michelle Ori Dipping Eyeshadow in Tigers or raid your blush collection for the right tone of red or orange - Catrice Pulse of Purism Powder Blush in Pure Hibiscocoon or L'Oréal True Match Blush in Nectarine.
