Oily Skin? Expert Advice on The Best Skin and Makeup Routine for You

Are you fed up having to deal with the constant battles you face with your oily or combination skin? We feel for you. When you're always having to blot away excess oil, its sometimes hard to grasp that every skin type comes with its own pros and cons.

We all know the downsides. You are prone to breakouts and large pores, light up like a beacon in pics and have to deal with makeup that melts no matter the weather. But the big plus is that you will age much better than your dry skin friends - your natural oils mean you will develop fewer lines and wrinkles. While that may not help right now, your face will thank you later.

While oily skin types suffer from all-over shine, combination skins have a greasy T-zone but dry patches on their cheeks and around their eyes. This skin type is characterised by shiny patches usually around your forehead, nose and chin. You might also have big pores, suffer from blackheads and possibly acne.

The oiliness is caused by your skin producing too much sebum (that's the oil in your skin). Because of the excess oil, you find yourself having to deal not only with skin issues, but also those dreaded 'is my makeup going to stick today' challenges.

The good news? If you make a few small changes to your eating, vitamin intake, skincare routine, the make up you use and how you apply it, you can keep your skin looking more glowy and glistening than greasy and gross.

Read on for expert advice on how to deal with skin that’s a little on the oily side, plus how you can 'train' your skin to produce less oil!

Tip #1. Start From Within

Your mom wasn't wrong when she told you to drink water and take your vitamins. Vitamin A is crucial for balancing the oil levels in your skin so be sure to start taking these daily. Vitamin B2 and Vitamin B5 also play a role in controlling oil secretion and can be found in foods like eggs, wheat germ, yeast, tomatoes, leafy vegetables, nuts and meat. Another great vitamin for skin is Vitamin C, which works with other vitamins to maintain your skin's elasticity.

Scientists have also noticed a link between high-glycemic foods and increased sebum (skin oil) production so avoid foods like bananas, potatoes, white bread, pasta, chips, alcohol and any other high-GI foods.

Lastly, be sure to drink your eight glasses of water a day to keep your skin healthy, hydrated and happy.

Tip #2. Switch Up Your Routine

While oily skin can be genetic, it could also be caused by an oil/water imbalance in your skin, which can be changed if you switch up your skincare routine. Lots of women with oily skin think the excess oil means they're moisturised enough so skip the moisturiser. But then your skin starts to feel dehydrated so actually overproduces oil to compensate for the lack of moisture. Not what you want or need.

However, the thick consistency of many moisturisers can end up blocking your pores. So if you have a very oily skin, the best thing to do is to start using a serum like the ones from Clarins, Ponds or L'Oréal’s Total Effects range, as these are light-weight and hydrate just the right amount. A little word of warning. If you have combo skin, you may still need a heavier moisturiser for your cheeks and eyes, and just use a serum on the shiny bits.

A toner is another step to add to your routine to help mattify your skin. Many experts advise using products for acne-prone skin, even if you don’t have acne, as they are especially designed to remove the cause of oily skin from your pores: oil, sebum and dirt. Try SebaMed Deep Cleansing Facial Toner for acne prone skin.

Tip #3. Key Ingredients

Learn what skin care ingredients are going to de-oil and treat your skin and look for them in every product you buy.

The main ingredient to look out for is salicylic acid, which removes dead skin cells and oil. We recommend trying either the Bioderma, BioNike Acteen or Eucerin Dermo Purifyer ranges. Another goodie is hyaluronic acid, which can be found in L'Oréal’s Revitalift Filler Renew. It is an ingredient that minimises the appearance of pores and hydrates the skin.

If you have acne, you should look for benzoyl peroxide which can be found in Benzac AC5, a product that treats pimples, unclogs pores and prevents bacteria from growing.

Finally, retinol is full of Vitamin A so will speed up skin cell production and help with blackheads, plus it's an amazing anti-ageing agent.  Endocil have a specialist retinol cream in their range.

Always remember to always look for products marked as non-comedogenic - this means they won't clog your pores which is key to keeping your skin looking clear.

Tip #4. Treat Yourself

Treat your skin to a face mask twice a week and an exfoliation session once a week.

Exfoliating opens up your pores and removes dead skin cells, white heads and black heads. Regular exfoliation will prevent the build up of dirt, oil and skin cells in your pores; the main cause of break outs. Garnier has a good exfoliating scrub in their Pure Active range. Be careful not to exfoliate too much as this can lead to overstimulating the oil glands to produce even more oil - the last thing you want.

Look for masks that contain sulphur, which is anti-bacterial and soaks up excess oil. Try the ones from either Skin Republic or Freemans. Clay masks are also good to soak up all that unwanted oil and grease. And Mineral Line's Dead Sea Mud Mask will help clear up impurities and tighten pores. A word of caution from the pros. Remove a clay/mud mask just before it dries fully as leaving it on too long can actually dehydrate and irritate the skin.

Tip #5. Blot It Away

If you weren't aware of the magic of blotting papers then you’re about to have your world changed and never look back. We are all familiar with the sensation of your makeup slowly melting south throughout the day and with oily skin this process happens super-fast - even on a cool day. Sure, you can reapply your face power constantly, but eventually you're going to be caked in colour and your pores will be super clogged. You can try blot your face with a napkin or tissue but as you remove the oil you also remove your carefully applied makeup.

Blotting papers not only absorb excess moisture and oil from your face but they leave your makeup in place. Have a pack in your handbag at all times.  You can find some in the Palladio range.

Tip #6. Choose Your Makeup Carefully

Because moisturised and glowing skin is the trend right now, lots of foundations are formulated to make your skin appear more dewy and luminous. The last thing you want is to add extra gloss to your already oily face. It's best to avoid products that promise to make you glow and choose foundations with a matte finish instead. Long-wear formulas are also designed specially to beat the melting effect and curb shiny skin.

Counter your skins' naturally high liquid levels with non-liquid-based products. Switch all those liquid blushes, cream eye shadows and eyebrow gels for more solid, stay-put formulas like powders and pencils. Steer clear from shimmery or highlighting products as they will make any hint of sheen on your face worse.

Tip #7. Set It In

There's nothing worse than spending ages on your contouring only for it to shift as the day goes on and your shine sets in. Always set your liquid foundation with a powder formula on top, be it a powder in the same shade as your foundation or a see-through translucent powder like the fixing powder from Essence.

When you feel the need to touch up later on, avoid layering powder over powder by using a setting spray - a light-weight spray designed to not only keep your makeup in place, but also mattify and control oil.

Tip #8. Less Is More

The less layers you wear the happier your pores will be, so try cut down on the number of products you apply to minimise pore clogging. A tinted moisturiser or BB cream that contains an SPF combines three layers into one. Garnier's BB Cream is a great multitasker which offers a number of benefits for your skin.

One layer to add, however, is a makeup primer like Rimmel's Fix & Protect. Primers make your skin matte, every oily skin girl's dream, and help your makeup to stay in place. Apply after your skin care routine but before your makeup.  Also, be sure to use a specially formulated primer for your eyes to keep your eye make up from creasing and under-eye concealer from shifting. Palladio's eyeshadow primer is a good option and has a natural herbal based formula to boot.

Tip #9. Everyday Habits

Because you've got a little more oil to work with than the next girl you need to incorporate a few more steps into your everyday routine.

Once you've completed your skincare routine and have applied your primer take a piece of blotting paper and dab your problem areas (usually the T-zone and chin). Next apply your foundation using either a foundation brush or a blending sponge and then blot again. Lastly dust on your translucent powder or spritz on your LA Girl Pro setting spray to give you a seamless matte finish and you're good to go. Taking these extra steps will mean less blotting throughout the day.
