The Surprising Lipstick Trends You Will Soon See Everywhere

By BeYou[tiful]
Don't you just love it when the seasons change? Just as we are all getting bored of the same old summer sandals and lipstick, all the new winter trends arrive. Yippee yay! Time for serious mall trawls to stock up on new stuff. And this year there are some very yummy and slightly offbeat lip trends to look out for.

The classic reds and dark moody lips will still be with us for a while - always with some minor mods from season to season. But, like all true makeup passionistas, we are always on the lookout for the latest and greatest - the edgiest of trends for an insta update of our winter face with the statement lip of the season.

This winter is all about mixing it up. The colour trends are all about contrasts - an eye-catching mix of both vibrant and neutral hues from bold fuchsias to pitch black and lively oranges to soft nudes. We also see the return of gloss (edged with a little glittery glow). And the intro of Lipstick Queen's edgy lip kit with its sparkly black transformer has seen the rise of the smoky lip trend. Some surprising brights and finishes are just about to liven up your winter lips...

Electric Pink

Sooo - just when you thought you were going to have to switch to those same-old dark winter lip hues (boring!), along comes bold punch of summer colour. Definitely not a girly girly pink, the shade of the season is a bright and heavily pigmented fuchsia - which almost ventures into neon territory. Seen on the runways worn with a solid line of bright aqua swept along the eye crease (next to the lashes can work too), this look is perfect for pure out-there fashion statement girls. The bonus? It's all over the summer runways too so is not a one hit wonder...

Product picks: Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in Orchid, Yardley Stayfast Liquid Matte Vinyl Lipgloss in Killer Pink and L'Oreal Infallible Mega Gloss in Sky is the Limit.

Go for Gloss

Okay - we sneakily admit we're officially bored with matte, matte and more matte. So we couldn't be more elated about the timely return of gloss to totally switch it up this season. And even better, it's so much more than just plain old boring gloss - its multidimensional. Aside from the heavy vinyl finish seen on many of the runways, gloss showed up in many forms. From a soft shimmery pout to sparkle-infused glosses to mimic those gorgeous glitter lips - the choice is yours. And don't forget to add the finishing touch to any lip with a dab of eye catchy glittery gloss in the middle of your pout. Glow, baby, glow.

Product picks: LA Girl Glazed Lip Paint in Peony, Essence Glossy Kiss Lipbalm in Raspberry Kiss and Essence Glossy Stick Lip Colour in Luminous Rosewood.

Unapologetic Orange

Time to pull off the badass girl look! We're not just talking the vibrant corals here. This season's oranges are truly electric in hue. It's all about the bright and the bold - and super pigmented to boot.  The truly great thing about orange is that it is a lot easier to match to your skin tone than that perfect (and often elusive) red. It's also one of those vibrant hues that always looks gorgeous on black skins. Wear alone as a statement lip with perfect skin or pair with a soft smoky eye. The more adventurous of you can offset your tangerine lip with a pretty pastel blue or lavender eye.

Decadently Dark

Yes - we hear you. Goth has been on the fringe of a comeback for a while. And this is definitely the season of the dark lip - from straight up black to bordeaux, prune, burgundy and even chestnut. It was pretty much open season on the finish - either a flat matte perfectly lined pout or finished with a vinyl slick of plump clear gloss with slightly smudged edges. But although goth peeked through in some of the shows, most of the moody pouts were more luxurious and decadent than true goth. As renowned MUA Pat McGrath so succinctly put it - "The look is purely rebellious, but it's not grunge." Time to be a little daring...

Product picks:  Palladio Velvet Matte Cream Lipcolor in Tapestry, LA Girl Matte Lipcolor in Raven and Yardley Stayfast Liquid Matte Vinyl Lipgloss in Femfatale.

Baby Pink Pouts

For those of you who find bright pink a little hectic, the prettiest fall-back trend is to the innocent cuteness of a baby's pink pout. From the lightest of pink and peach nudes to a traditional rose and oh so pretty pastel candy-coloured pinks, these dominated the runways this season. They were generally paired with a bold eye - graphic shadow or exaggerated lines - but are also worn as part of the fresh-faced look. The rose and sugary pinks were also seen in the monochromatic look (same shade on eyes, cheeks and lips) which has been favoured by a lot of red carpet schlebs...

Smoky Smudge

And you always thought that smoky was just for eyes? Turns out that smoky lips are just as gorgeous. This trend started with the Lipstick Queen kit which layers a shimmery black shade over a nude pink pout. The effect is a drop dead fabulous darkly smudged lip with a light shimmer. While some Lipstick Queen product is available locally, we haven't seen the kit - yet. Never fear. It's easy to duplicate with your favourite nude and a glossy black - just 'smoke' the black around the edges of the lip smudging into a lighter hue in the middle of your pout for a stunning ombré finish. Try it with other shades - we just loove the rouge-noir combo with a little bit of gloss...

Our multipurpose smoky product pick is LA Girl Glazed Lip Paint in Temptation.

Poshi Purple

It's always super cool to be ahead of a trend - and gorgeous purple hues are just one of those trends. They were seen sneaking onto the winter runways and continue on the fringes into summer this year. This one is for those of you who want a signature avant-garde look. From bold amethyst to lilac hues which almost border on neon, this is one kickass way to make a strong lip statement. Make it even bolder with a strong black graphic liner design or embrace the coloured eye trend with a single stroke of teal green liner to complement your lavender lips. You go girl...
