The It Girl Approved Eyeshadow You Need to Wear Right Now

Just in case you missed it, burgundy eyeshadow is the hottest and prettiest shade we've seen all over the red carpet. Celebrities like Joan Small, Tessa Thompson, Gigi Hadid, Kylie Jenner and Olivia Wilde have all been spotted wearing this bold statement making trend.

It all started with the red eyeshadow look. And while you may have been a little freaked out about wearing red for fear it may look like you have 'pink eye', burgundy eyeshadow is your new best friend. This shade is pretty close to the new neutral - it looks gorgeous on all skin tones and can be worn either as a darkly smudged smoky eye or a subtle light wash across your lids. It truly is a faultless and easy way to break out of the classic brown eyeshadow rut.

If you're feeling a little cautious about making the move, we tapped into our makeup artist pros for a few tips on how to look gorgeous without going over the top.

Tip #1. Make your eyes the focal point

Don't try and go all matchy-matchy with a plum or berry lipstick - no-one will know where to look. Keep the rest of the face fresh and clean, ensure your blush is of the same colour family and wear a nude toned lip. That way you will look gorgeous and trendy without being tacky.

Tip #2. Choose a shade which matches your skin undertone

The rule of thumb is rich warm reddish shades for golden and olive-skinned girls, and deeper plummy purple hues for pink/red/bluey skin tones. If you're not sure of your skin undertone, check it out here. Otherwise lean towards the warmer tones which tend to go well with most skin tones. Burgundy also works for all eye colours, especially blue and green, and brings out the sparkle in hazel eyes.

Tip #3. Watch the pigment intensity

The deeper your complexion, the softer and subtler a burgundy shade will blend. So dark-skinned girls should choose a shadow with intense pigment to make the most of the colour. The opposite is true of lighter skin tones. Be careful of going too intense and look for a lighter payoff formula.

Tip #4. If you’re a little put off by so much colour, start off with baby steps

Sweep a light wash of colour into your crease and pair with a simple cat eye. Or try a soft smoky ombré look offset by a subtle pearlised cream or gold. A simple burgundy cat eye can look absolutely stunning. Or you can pair a red toned brown lid with a soft burgundy smudge under your lower lash line - finished off with big lashes. Tip #5. Take the next step; up the accents

Now that you've dipped your toe in, you can start experimenting with bolder looks. Burgundy hues will actually make for a prettier and subtler smoky than your usual graphic charcoal shades. For that perfect party look, try adding a little gold glitter in the centre of your lid or as an accent line in your crease. And mix and match with other bold metallics like intense gold or turquoise blue. Time to start blending...
