Breath-Taking Cat Eye Looks You'll See Everywhere This Year

08 May, 2018
By Andie Reeves
This year is all about the eye, more specifically the cat eye. While some trends are hard to pull off (bleached brows, we’re looking at you) a winged eyeliner looks good on everyone, because who doesn’t want wider eyes with fuller-looking lashes.

The cat eye draws attention to the outer corners and creates the effect of pulling your eyes outwards. This leaves tired eyes looking more awake, makes your lashes look thicker by adding depth to the area and widens your eyes.

If you’re someone who suffers from chronic panda eyes you’ll love this trend because of the quick-drying and smudge-free nature of liquid liners. But while this look is all about feline flicks we’re not only using liners. Models were seen wearing eye shadows in winged shapes too.

Here are six different ways to nail the cat eye this year:

The Classic Wing

You just can’t go wrong with an Audrey Hepburn-esque cat eye. And it’s super easy to achieve. The biggest mistake people make when trying to recreate this deceptively simple look is making their flick curved. The curve is actually an illusion; the look is made up of 2 straight lines.

First draw a straight line from your eye’s outer corner up towards your brow tail, then another straight line from that point down to the centre of where your eyelid meets your lash line. Once you’ve coloured in the triangle created by these lines and open your eye you’ll have the perfect flick and look set to stomp the runway for Dolce & Gabbana (well, almost).

Our product picks: Almay Pen Liquid Eyeliner Black and Michelle Ori Feliner Waterproof Liquid Liner Noir.

The Grungy Goth Liner

Goth girls rejoice: the grungy 90s eye is sticking around for another season. Normally we would advise against lining your waterline because it makes your eyes look smaller, but when combined with the eye widening effect of a cat eye it totally works.

This cat eye look wraps around the whole eye (don’t be afraid of lining your inner corner even) and works best with a kohl pencil, which you can easily smudge if that’s the vibe you’re going for.

Use a black or dark grey eye shadow for the wing if you don’t want to look too Halloween-ish and pair with contoured cheeks and nude lippie.

Our product picks: L’Oréal Infallible Eyeliner Day Night Black and Revlon Colorstay Eyeliner Black.

The Metallic Wing

Metallic accents are all over the runways, and why keep it limited to just your earrings and nails? Touches of metallic in a range of shades are being swept all over the eyes of models at fashion week.

Try using a metallic liquid liner for your cat-eye by itself or layered up on top of your black liner. Or sweep a shadow in a beautiful bronze or shimmering silver in a large winged shape. It’s harder to create a crisp line with powder shadow but you can cheat it by sticking a piece of tape along your wing line, sweeping on your powder, then peeling away the tape to reveal your perfect line.

Keep the rest of your face minimal but match your nails in the same metallic shade if you’re feeling extra.

Our product picks: Michelle Ori Long Stay Eyeliner Silver, Essence Extreme Lasting Eye Pencil Heart of Gold, Yardley Stayfast Eyeshadow Stick Gilded and Rimmel Magnifeyes Kohl Eyeshadow Rose Gold.

The 60s Double Flick

A lot of fashion has been borrowing from the ‘60s this season as well as a certain make up look: the double-flicked cat-eye. This style of eyeliner will have you channelling your inner Twiggy and Lana Del Rey and leave you look super wide-eyed.

Start by creating a classic wing. Then line your lower lash line (start in line with the middle of your eye) and extend it out parallel with your first wing, making sure they are roughly 7mm apart. If you don’t want to look too clean-cut use a blunt pencil. The lines can look bold and blocked or more delicate and wispy.

Our product picks: Essence 2in1 Eyeliner Pen and Rimmel Scandaleyes Thick & Thin Eyeliner.

The Touch of Drama

For those who want a little more oomph than a simple cat eye you’re in luck because uber dramatic wings are super on-trend right now. Anything goes, from Amy Winehouse-like massive and thick wings to wings that sit under the bottom of the eye instead of up top.

Another dramatic look worth trying is the minimal wing, where you leave the lid bare. If you struggle perfecting your wing try doing a cat eye as usual then carefully wiping your lid clean with a makeup removing wipe.

Our product picks: LA Girl Mark My Eyes Liquid Liner Bold and Revlon Colorstay Cream Eyeshadow Licorice.

The Colourful Cat Eye

Who says a winged eye can only be achieved with black liner? Colourful eyes are having a big moment and make up artists are combining bold shades with the cat eye to create playful looks.

Use a powder formula eye shadow to create a wing that is softer and subtler. Or use a hyper-pigmented liner to draw a sharp line that brings the drama. Keep the rest of your face bare or throw out the rule book and go all out by combining different colours on your lids or even matching your lipstick to your wing shade.

Our product picks: Sinful Colors Stop And Stare Gel Eyeliner Provocative, L’Oréal Infallible Gel Crayon Liner I've Got The Blue and Violet Va Va Voom, and Essence Extreme Lasting Eye Pencil Mermaid For Life.
