Natural No-Makeup Makeup: The Savvy Girl’s Guide to Dewy Fresh-Faced Skin

It had to happen. Skin is IN. It’s a trend that’s been getting more and more show time on the runways, but now the nearly natural, no-makeup makeup look is officially the next big thing…

Time to say bye-bye to Kontouring, faux-looking skin, Insta brows and falsies. And hello to clear glowing skin and ‘almost’ all-natural makeup with just a touch of highlighter, mascara and gloss. It’s all about a soft and natural lit-from-within radiance, lightly brushed brows, real lashes, and a lick of sheer dewy colour on your eyes, cheeks and lips.

The trend towards natural looking makeup means taking a step back from the ultra-matte formulas of recent years. It’s now all about light and airy options. From foundation and concealer to eyeshadow and lipstick - the lighter, the better.

It’s also time to forget those powders and embrace moist, creamy formulas that shout dewy skin - not matte. Natural complexion boosters like shimmery highlighters and cream blush are about to become your go-to ‘must-haves’ to boost that healthy natural glow.

Many of you lucky lovelies have perfect skin and can happily go ‘au-naturel’ without a blink. But some of us actually need little help in smoothing out our skin tone and covering up the odd blemish here and there.

This easy step-by step guide to applying a perfect natural no-makeup makeup look will have you sorted in no time. It’s a lot easier than you think, and when you whip through your morning makeup routine in less than 15 minutes, you’ll wonder why you’ve never done it before…

Before You Start

As the natural makeup look is all about enhancing your natural beauty, be sure to know what colours suit your skin tone best. To look the most natural, your makeup needs to compliment your skin, not clash with it.

If you have cool blue or pinky-red undertones, then pick illuminating face and eye products with a pink, white or silver base, while warm yellowy-golden or olive undertones would love anything with flecks of gold or warm bronze.

For other colour products like eyeshadows or lipstick, think a nude shade. It doesn’t have to be called nude; it just has to be two shades darker than your natural skin tone, whether you have a light, medium, brown or dark skin.

Where you can, swop out your powders for creams. Cream everything - blusher, highlighter, bronzer and eyeshadow. Creams just make everything blend better and sink right in leaving you with a far more natural glow than powders.

Plump & Prime Your Skin First

Moisturise & Moisturise Some More

Before starting out on this natural makeup journey, indulge in some healthy skin prep. This look is all about glowing, natural skin. And a glowing skin starts with lots of moisture to plump up your skin.

One of the best ways to achieve this is to use a hyaluronic acid serum that attracts up to 1000 times its own weight in water, and will give your face a healthy moisture boost before applying your normal moisturiser. Our favourite is Vichy Mineral 89 Booster.

Prime That Skin

It can be very tempting to skip this step entirely but makeup pros swear by primers for good reason. They even out your skin by reducing the appearance of large pores and other imperfections, creating a perfectly smooth canvas for your foundation.

Because this look is all about good looking skin, a primer like Maybelline Baby Skin Pore Eraser Primer will fill any pores without clogging them the way your foundation might. An illuminating primer will add that “lit from within” glow and make your skin look extra hydrated.

Pre-Highlight for Extra Glow

One of the single best-kept makeup secrets is pre-highlighting. It’s all about adding a liquid highlighter before your foundation. Some products that can do this are radiance drops (like Essence Highlight Drops Liquid Illuminator), and tinted moisturisers that have an illuminating finish.

All of these products should be tapped into the skin - not rubbed in - covering the cheekbones, the forehead and down the nose. This allows a natural sheen to peek through your foundation for full glow potential.

A Sheer Glowing Face

A Whisper of Foundation

Step away from thick, heavy coverage foundations and allow your skin to look like skin - with the thinnest veil of hydrating coverage. A BB or CC Cream would be perfect - we love the finish of LA Girl Pro BB Cream. A lightweight water-based makeup like MAC Face and Body Foundation would also be a great choice.

Another easier way to get a more natural look is to mix in a little moisturiser in with your normal foundation. And if you want to dial up the glow, try adding a few drops of a liquid highlighter to give your skin an instantly natural, dewy finish. A must-have addition to your glowy skin makeup kit is Essence Insta Perfect Liquid Highlighter.

It’s not only your foundation that is the trick to a natural glow, but also how you apply it. Lightly patting it on with a buffing brush or a wet sponge is the best way to seamlessly blend it into your face.

Cover up Those Flaws

Rather than covering your whole face with foundation, use concealer strategically to cover up any of those unwanted dark marks or blemishes. The trick is to keep both the product and application super lightweight.

You only need a light touch of a basic liquid concealer to cover up spots and marks, but still look natural. Maybelline Fit Me Concealer is great option. If dark under eye circles are a concern, opt for a liquid illuminating one like Revlon Photoready Candid Concealer to lighten and brighten up the eye area.

Use a concealer brush to lightly pat it onto the odd blemish and under the eyes. And if you need a little more cover up, try colour correcting .

Get That Glow

The natural makeup look is all about a softly lit-from-within radiance, not the heavy strobing look of a few years back. Opt for a creamy illuminating highlighter on the top of your cheekbones, the centre of your forehead, on the bridge of your nose and the cupids bow. If you have deep nasolabial lines, a subtle highlighter can also work wonders by giving you a mini face lift in this area.

We love LA Girl Luminous Glow Skin Illuminator for a natural healthy glow, and Maybelline Master Chrome Jelly Highlighter, a lightweight buildable gel formula that just melts into the skin.

If you’re feeling a little adventurous, mix a facial oil and cream highlighter for the most beautiful natural glow on your cheekbones. And for a subtle glowy shimmer that works on all skin tones, try the fresh gel texture of Catrice Bouncy Bronzer Carribbean Vibes .

A Hint of Blush

Unless you are very shiny, skip powder and go for a cream like Rimmel’s Royal Blush Cream or Palladio’s 2-in-1 Cheek and Lip Tint. You don’t want to look too matte or cakey – a natural heathy glow is the aim.

You can even try a lightly tinted bronzing glow for the most natural blush look to accent your cheekbones. Physicians Formula Nude Wear Glowing Nude Bronzer offers four gorgeous shades you can play with.

The Finishing Touches

Soft Focus Eyes

The skin is the star of the show with this look, so it’s ok to go light on the eyes. A great shadow for a soft natural eye is just a wash of illuminating bronzing powder. But if you want a little more natural colour with a velvety sheen, you’ll love the luxurious Almay Velvet Foil Eye Shadow Cream. All you need is to dab on a tiny bit and quickly blend it out with your fingers for a light wash of colour.

And if you’d like your small or deep-set eyes to look a tad larger, add a flesh coloured liner to the waterlines of your eyes to make them pop.

Brush Up Your Brows

The best part of this look? Naturally bushy and soft feathered brows are trending again. The most subtle way is to simply use a tinted brow gel to brush your natural brows up and into place.

If they’re looking a little sparse, use a taupe pencil to lightly fill in the scant areas and brush through the hairs with a spoolie. Taupe is the most natural and neutral brow colour that suits all brows and skin tones.

Go Light on The Lashes

You officially have the go-ahead to skip your mascara altogether. Use your trusty eyelash curler to give you a natural lift and finish off with some Essence clear mascara gel for a light sheen - and to hold the curl in place.

But if that’s a little too hectic a step for your sparse lashes, then invest in a more natural looking brown mascara for a hint of colour. We love Essence I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Brown Mascara for the lash defining brush. You only need to lightly lift your top lashes with a single sweep to open up your eyes without the heaviness.

Just-Been-Kissed Lips

A light touch of colour and a lick of balm or gloss is the way to go. To pull off a look as realistic as your own, rub a finger over your favourite nude lipstick, and then lightly press and dab the colour all over your lips. Blot with a tissue to get a softly stained look, and finish off with a lip butter balm for a soft, blurry barely-there shine. Or dab on some lightly tinted Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil for a little more of a glossy look…

You can also keep it simple and just finish off with a basic dewy pout - a dash of lightly tinted nude lip gloss like Essence Plumping Nudes that has natural shades for all skin tones, will do the trick.
