Think Opposites When You Want Awesome Eyes

Have you ever had an experience where you've absolutely loved a certain eye shadow colour, yet once on your face it just doesn't look right and you land up having a bad make-up day because of it?

Chances are it's just not your shade, no matter how much you love it. Don't stress - there's a simple trick MUA's use to choose the best eyeshadow that will make your eyes really pop.

You can't say 'make up artist' without the word 'artist' and so we're returning to what we learned in art class about the colour wheel. Think about colour correcting concealers, where we use opposite colours to cancel out unwanted colour like green on red blemishes or yellow on blue under-eye bags.

By using these opposite colours, you can also enhance the natural colour of your eye and really bring it to life. It's so simple but it works every time; look for the opposite colour to the colour of your eyes on the colour wheel and you will find your best and most flattering eye statement yet.

One little tip to make your life easier: if you ever want to stray away from your eyes' complementary colour then go for purple. Purple is the most universally flattering shade for all eyes; just be sure to choose one in a shade that complements your skin’s undertones.

Here's your cheat sheet.

Blue Eyes

The opposite colour of blue is orange, so any orange-based shadow will make your blue eyes really pop. We know what you're thinking: bright orange eye shadow is not exactly an every day look, but we're talking anything with an orange undertone to it. This includes apricot, peach, gold, bronze, salmon and warm browns.

If you want to dabble with purple choose a red/plum-based shade. For a night time look you can mix a hint of green into your look, and the contrast of a bold black eyeliner really sets off your peepers.

If your eyes are light blue use neutral browns and bronze shadows to create a serious contrast with your eyes that really makes them pop. If they're on the grey side of blue go for vibrant oranges and coral, and if you've got deep blue eyes dark blue or brown eyeliner will enhance the depth of your blue.

Green Eyes

If your eyes are green, which sits opposite red on the colour wheel, then lucky you for having the most rare eye colour. In general, you can choose shadows with red undertones like copper, magenta, brown, plum and burgundy to achieve your best enhancing effect.

If your eyes are an emerald green try out the red eye shadow trend; you can really pull it off. If you have hints of yellow in your eyes go for berry tones and if you have brown flecks in your green eyes then purple-y reds are perfect.

To keep your eyes popping after dark mix a deep wine colour with a black liner (the addition of black will avoid your eyes just looking red and irritated). A hint of yellow-gold or teal can be added to the mix when you want something a bit more dramatic.

Grey Eyes

Having grey eyes is almost like having a blank canvas: you can make them look more blue, green or grey depending on what colours you surround them with. To see what tones your grey eyes lean towards, put on a white shirt and look in the mirror. Assess whether you see hints of blue or green and work from there.

If you want them to look more blue use browns and orange-y tones; more green, use red toned colours; and if you want them to appear more grey use monochrome tones like black, silver or charcoal.

The most flattering eyeliner shade for you is one in a brown shade. For night apply the same colour theory as before but choose shades with a shimmer to them; your eyes will truly sparkle.

If your skin has cool undertones then cool, icy shades like light blue and silver will work really well on you.

Hazel/Honey Eyes

Hazel eyes are a bit more complex because they are rarely just one colour, ranging from olive to amber, yellow to golden, and usually with brown, green, honey or golden flecks. This means there are a wide range of shades that work with your unique eye colour.

If you want to enhance the browns in your eyes use shades of blue, if you want to bring out the golden honey tones in your eyes choose purple-y plums, and if you have hints of green that you would like to enhance then try red-toned coppers or purple hues.

If you want your eyes to look lighter use a light purple. If you want to play up the dark side of your eyes then a deep purple will do so. A great evening look for you is gold eyeliner, which will play up your yellow undertones and brighten your eyes.

Brown Eyes

Brown-eyed girls are the luckiest when it comes to eye make up as this neutral shade will work well with pretty much anything. Colours that would look way too wild on anyone else look gorgeous on you so feel free to get experimental. You can really pull off bold colours, especially blues and purples.

For an understated look try a brown eyeliner, which will define without making your eyes appear smaller. A simple line of a brightly coloured eye liner is your best bet for after dark.

If you have brown eyes with dark skin go for bright colours or metallics with warm undertones (such as gold, bronze and copper) to best complement your complexion. Avoid pastels as they could make you look washed out. To make your colour really stand out, choose formulas that have a high concentration of pigments in them - this will avoid colours 'disappearing' into your skin and allow you to make the eye statement you want.
