How to Banish Frizzy Hair When It’s Beyond Humid

When your hair turns into another hot mess on humid summer days, don't you wish you could get rid of those frizzy, flyaway hair problems - forever? We unpack the reason why it frizzes and what you can do to tame your tresses, whether they're natural or fine.

The first warm day after winter feels amazing and is enough to get us all excited for summer. That is until your hair slowly stars getting bigger and bigger and by the end of the day is a big, humid ball of frizz. Maybe your reaction isn't quite as extreme, but even the shiniest of hair is more prone to a flyaway or frizz attack when there's humidity in the air.

If your hair is dry, your cuticle layers stand up to absorb more moisture, and if you want your hair to be sleek and shiny you want your cuticles to be lying flat (but more on how to achieve that later).  When it's humid, there is an excess of hydrogen in the air, and the open cuticles in your hair absorb it in their attempt to get more moisture. The result? Instant frizz.

This means that, whether you have thick and curly or thin, flyaway hair, to combat frizz it's important to keep your hair super moisturised so that it's less likely to absorb the excess moisture in the air. Read on for tips on how to get your hair looking frizz-free, whatever your hair texture is.

Start with Your Shampoo Routine

It's vital that your shampoo and conditioner are sulphate-free, moisturising formulas. This will provide your hair with enough moisture that it doesn't need to absorb more from the environment.

As shampoo tends to strip your hair of natural oils - not good if you are trying to tame frizz - try the co-washing technique (aka conditioner washing) to reduce your hair's regular exposure to those harsher suds. This means you alternate between a shampoo and conditioner wash day and a conditioning only wash day - leaving your hair much more moisturised and silky smooth.

Another step to take while washing your hair is to adjust the temperature of the water you use. You can use lukewarm water to rinse out shampoo but conditioner should be washed out using cold water. This closes the cuticle of your hair and makes it lie flatter once dry.

Dry Your Hair Properly

When you're out of the shower resist the urge to rub your hair with a towel to hurry up the drying process. This vigorous rubbing causes friction and raises your hair cuticle. So, if you have a tendency to frizz, most stylists recommend you let your hair air dry 80% of the way.

But we all know that’s not always practical when you're rushing to get to work in the mornings. So, instead of rubbing use a patting motion, and if you want to be extra gentle on your hair, use something made out of softer fabric, like a t-shirt or a microfibre towel, to dry it.

Friction is a huge contributor to hair frizz, and it’s not just caused by rough towelling. While you sleep your hair is rubbing against your pillow, which is why you sometimes wake up with a totally new look (one you didn't ask for). You can prevent this by either using a silk pillow case, pinning your hair into a top knot or covering your hair while you sleep.

Use Products on Wet Hair

While your hair is still damp run a lightweight serum or oil through it to encourage it to dry without poof-ing out. Always apply only through the last two thirds of your hair; any higher and you risk looking like your hair is oily and unwashed.

Mousse is having a come back and is an amazing product for enhancing your natural curls while adding definition. If you don't like the defined look they give you, you can lightly brush out the mousse once your hair is dry. This will give your hair a light amount of controlled frizz, like a halo. Just look at a photo of someone with beautifully natural hair, like Solange, if you need a reminder that a small amount of frizz can look great.

Embrace Your Curls

Straightening your hair when it's humid sometimes feels like you're fighting a losing battle. By the end of the day it's puffed out into a big triangle and you feel defeated.

Know that this weather is going to make your hair want to curl and you might as well embrace it. After washing your hair, rub on a cream hydrator from root to tip and then smooth and style your curls by wrapping hair strands around your fingers.  Allow your hair to 80% air dry. Then using a diffuser (low speed, high heat), blow dry your hair. It will bring out your natural curls beautifully.

Blow-Dry Correctly

If, however, you refuse to be separated from your hair dryer and straighteners then just know to always use a nozzle on your hair dryer. This directs the heat to specific areas instead of blowing hot air all over your head, which is guaranteed to cause frizz.

Next, be sure to use a heat protector pre-blow dry as this will help detangle and straighten out the hair. Your best bet for a blow dry is to always use a boar bristle brush, as this will give you the smoothest result. Blow dry in a downward motion with your boar brush instead of creating volume with a round brush. This will help your cuticles to lie flat.

Finish off with a blast of cool hair, which, like when you used cold water earlier, seals your cuticles. Be sure that your hair is totally dry before you leave the house: any remaining dampness will have a frizzy freak out once you get outside.

Use Frizz-Fighting Hairstyles

What if you're out the house and feel the frizz creeping on but don't have any products on hand to help you? You don't need to run home or put a bag over your head. Be sure to always keep hair clips in your bag especially for emergency situations like this and you'll be fine.

A good hairstyle to sweep your hair into when the frizz levels are out of control is a high bun. It doesn't matter that your hair has drastically increased in volume due to the humidity; if anything, it helps because big and thick topknots are always chic.

If buns aren't your thing then get plaiting. Braid two French braids down the side of your head and either join them into a low bun at the base of your neck or pin them there. Now you're free to sweat without worrying about your hair getting bigger.

And for when you are really desperate, L'Oréal celebrity hairstylist, Mara Roszak, showed The Cut a neat trick to transform your frizzy mane into curls in 15 minutes tops.

Daily Care for Your Hair Type

So now you know how to prevent frizz the day you wash your hair, what about day two? Or day three? It depends on your hair type.

  • If your hair is relatively shiny and straight or wavy then work a small dollop of anti-frizz serum through your ends to keep the frizz at bay. Once most of the serum is off your hands gently pat the crown of your hair to tame those pesky little hairs that stand up on top of your head.

  • If your hair is coarse and thick you need to replenish the moisture levels of your hair more. You can use a thicker formula to insert moisture into your curls to stop them from deconstructing and frizzing. Rub the product into your hands and make a grabbing motion throughout the ends of your hair to disperse the product without breaking up your curls.

  • Introduce a weekly moisturising mask routine to keep your frizz under control permanently. You can raid your kitchen for natural ingredient frizzy hair helpers such as almond oil, avocado, coconut oil or banana, or you can invest in specialist hydrating masks such as Argan Oil Hydrating Hair Mask, Dove Intensive Repair Treatment Mask and Dark & Lovely Amla Replenishing Hair Mask.
