How to Choose the Best Hairstyle to Perfectly Suit Your Face Shape

Whether you're planning a big chop or just wanting to switch up your hairstyle a bit we recommend you put a bit of extra thought in before you head to the salon. Just like one would take their body type into account before trying out the latest fashion trends (sure, Kylie Jenner can pull off wearing bicycle shorts as outer wear but most of us know to steer clear of them), it's important to take your face shape into account before attempting a hot new hair cut.

The shape of your face plays a crucial role in how a haircut falls on you. This is why some girls look amazingly elegant with a pixie cut and some have to spend the months following their haircut wearing a beanie everywhere they go. Read on to discover your face shape and what style will best complement it.

Round Face

How to find out if you have a round face: The width of your forehead, cheeks and jaw line is equal, giving your face a full and rounded look. Your features are soft and your jaw line is rounded, not angular.

The best haircut for you: Long and layered styles.

Why it works: Usually if you have a round face shape you are aiming to elongate and streamline your face, which, with the wrong cut, can make you look like you are carrying extra weight on your cheeks. Layers are a great way to soften the sides of your cheeks and create the illusion of a longer and thinner face.

The shortest recommended length for you is just below your chin, as any shorter will accentuate your roundness. If you are thinking of getting a fringe, go for a side fringe: a straight fringe can be super unflattering and make you look more childish than cute. Also avoid any blunt styles: if you want a bob go for a tapered long bob rather than a traditional sharp one.

Pro styling hints: Curly hair on a round face can make you look chubby; we find running a straightener through just the ends of your hair (about the last 5cm) helps it to fall nicely and frame your face better. TRESemme has a good value for money straightener which should always be used together with a heat styling spray.

Heart-Shaped Face

How to find out if you have a heart face: If your forehead is the widest part of your face, and you have a 'pointy' chin (or your chin in the thinnest part of your face) then you have a heart-shaped face.

The best haircut for you: Any kind of fringe, a choppy bob or a pixie cut.

Why it works: You are lucky in that you can really play around with a fringe. Side-swept, long and overgrown, a super short micro fringe, whatever it is with your face shape you can pull it off.

If your chin is on the thin and pointy side you will probably want to balance it out so go for styles that create volume around your jaw line, like a bob. Go for a textured choppy style over a blunt cut so that the layers fall around your chin area and fill any negative space.

The heart-shaped face is the only one that can really pull off a sexy pixie cut so don't be scared of the big chop! This cut adds soft layers to your wider forehead and perfectly frames your killer cheekbones.

Pro styling hints: Avoid too much volume at the crown of your hair, as this will make you look too top heavy. Keep your look slick and streamline but still light and wispy by working a drop of serum (try Schwarzkopf Gliss Hair Repair Serum) through the ends.

Long Face

How to find out if you have a long face: Your forehead, cheeks and jaw line are proportioned equally but your face is more long than it is wide.

The best haircut for you: A fringe.

Why it works: Almost all types of fringes will look great on your face shape, just steer clear of a super short fringe! Our go-to fringe style for a long face is a choppy straight fringe cut at about eyebrow length. This will add width to your face, which breaks up your face's length.

Layers are great for adding width to your look but keep the shortest layer around chin height to avoid adding volume to the top section of your hair. Any styles that add volume and texture to the width of your hair are good so think big curls or choppy long layers.

Pro styling hints: Avoid too much volume at the roots of your hair, as this will add extra length to your face; not ideal! For easy curls, our product pick is Mondial Spiral Infinity Curling Iron.

Oval Face

How to find out if you have an oval face: The much-envied oval face shape has a forehead that is a bit wider than your chin and is similar to a long face but with softer and rounder features.

The best haircut for you: Pretty much any hairstyle.

Why it works: You're in luck; the oval-shaped face is the most versatile face shape and can pull off virtually any style they please. This makes you the perfect person to try out all the latest hair trends. With your face proportions, short hair looks especially good, especially when paired with a long and straight fringe.

Pro styling hints: The long bob is still having a big moment this year with a bit of a twist. Keep your length a bit longer than a classic bob but cut the back part a bit shorter for a more modern take. Another hair trend we’re loving and you should totally try your hand at is the Bardot fringe. That's a long fringe that parts in the middle and sweeps to each side of your face. Add a bit of volume to it with a spray of Batiste dry shampoo.

Square Face

How to find out if you have a square face: Your face is pretty much one width throughout, with your forehead, cheeks and jaw line all in line with each other. The difference between a round and a square face, however, is that a square face will have more angled features and a strong jaw line, not a rounded one.

The best haircut for you: Long hair with layers and lots of volume.

Why it works: Square faced women can use their haircut to add a feminine touch to their angular face shape. When it comes to length anywhere from just past your shoulders to just under your armpits is ideal, as short styles will make your face appear wider than it is.

This is the face shape that pulls off long locks the best, but remember that there is such thing as too long; keep it looking fresh, healthy and not dragged down by unnecessary length. Layers will add a soft look to your otherwise sharp face and consider a side-swept layered fringe too!

Pro styling hints: Draw attention away from your jaw line by opting for voluminous styles like big waves or a blow dry with a slight curl at the end. For the best results, use a heat protect spray like the one from ghd together with a good hairdryer like Phillips.

Colour it Right

Now that you've picked the right style, what about colour? Deciding between blond, brown, and red is tough enough without considering the spectrum of tones that exist within those hues. And then you have to think about how those shades work with your complexion? (Can we take a nap now?)

But understanding the nuances of tone can actually make the difference between choosing a good hair colour and your most flattering one ever-and with a little crash course, it's actually not that hard to figure out. "It's all about placement, saturation, and what undertones in your skin you'd like to emphasise," says Roxie Darling, colouring guru at New York City's Hairstory. "The decision you and your colourist have to make is which colour you would like to bring out in your face." See the full story from Byrdie for more.
