8 Easy (But Effective) Ways to Detox Your Body Right Now

When someone says detox, do you immediately think of a whole bunch of smoothies hijacking your meals? But what if we told you that detoxing doesn't mean going on a crash diet?

Our bodies are extremely efficient at getting rid of nasty toxins. Organs like the liver and kidneys are brilliant detoxifiers but even they can get stretched to their limits with all the not-so-nice things we put our body through. So a detox is actually a simple way to get all your working parts running smoothly again.

The good news? It doesn't have to be a full cleanse where you dramatically cut your food intake to lose a whole lot of weight. Detoxing can be as easy as drinking enough H2O to keep digestion in check and eating foods that help filter gunk out of your gut. A detox just involves the resetting of some food choices and making a few simple changes to your lifestyle to help amp up the detoxification process and improve your overall health.

And while a detox might help you lose a little weight, that's not the only reason you should give it a try. A detox helps your body's vital organs rest and recover, support and increase liver function, and give you a “boost” of important micronutrients. They have also been proven to reduce headaches, anxiety, depression and joint pain.

Detoxing does not have to be all hard work. Turns out you can have a relaxing bath and detox at the same time. Just dissolve one or two cups of Epsom salts in your tub, chill out for about 40 minutes, and all the magnesium and sulphates will draw out your body's toxins (and ease any aches and pains). For extra oomph, add 8 drops of lavender oil to help you relax, ease stress, and have a good night's sleep.

Take Probiotics Daily

Did you know that 70% of your immunity resides in your gut? So if you're prone to little ailments all the time (or regular breakouts), it’s quite possible that your gut health is out of sync. Your gut is an enormously complex microbiome made up of a mix of bacteria. A healthy mix keeps your entire system in balance so you can detox efficiently.
 
Probiotics are the “good” bacteria that help reduce inflammation and prevent infection, and are critical for overall gut health. Ensure you are getting your regular dose of probiotic rich, fermented foods from yogurt (with live cultures), sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi or tempeh.  Or you can take a high-quality supplement.

Dry Brush

Proponents of dry brushing claim it’s effective at stimulating the lymphatic system which is turns eliminates toxins. While there isn’t enough evidence that dry brushing can detox the body, some encouraging stories suggest it does help. Fast for 12 Hours

You've heard about the 12-hour (or intermittent) fasting diet? Where you don't eat for 12 hours between dinner and breakfast? It turns out a 12-hour fasting period can also help detox the body.

It all comes down to the basics. For 6-8 hours after eating the body is busy digesting your food; however, the last four hours are focussed on detox and are also the most effective fat-burning time. But you can't eat too late as leptin then signals to the brain that the body doesn't need any energy - so you lose out on that important detoxing and fat burning period.

Meditate

Yay - another time when detoxing doesn't have to be hard work. According to Gabrielle Francis, a naturopath and the founder of NYC-based The Herban Alchemist, endotoxins can also result from negative thoughts, emotions and stress. She suggests that part of detoxing should also be to nourish the mind. Although you might feel you have it under control, stress of any kind (including lack of sleep) impacts on how both your body and mind function. Tap into some soothing meditation music online and make sure you get at least 7-8 hours' sleep to fully reset your body.

Drink Oolong Tea

Oo-what tea? Black and green (and even white) tea we know about. But it's not surprising that not many of us have heard about oolong tea - it only accounts for 2% of the worlds tea consumption.
