Finding the Most Awesome Red Lipstick for You Is Actually Easy

The bold red lip is having another moment, and what better timing than just before Valentine’s Day. There’s a reason why red lips are always on-trend; it’s a timeless look that adds instant sex-appeal to any outfit and works for all occasions.
Are you one of those women who tried red lippie out once but didn’t love how it looked and wrote it off forever? The fact is red lipstick looks amazing on every woman; you’ve just got to find the right shade! The Ruby Woos and the Cherry Bombs might all look the same to you but look closer and you’ll see some have blue undertones, some more of an orange tinge, some a hint of pink - the combinations are endless. Knowing your complexion and its undertones can help you find the shade that will make your lips pop best, plus your skin appear brighter and teeth whiter.
Ever noticed that your best friend’s favourite shade of red makes her look radiant and hot but leaves you looking washed-out? This is because everyone has different undertones that come into play when choosing what make up (and clothing!) colours suit you. If you’re warm-toned your veins appear more green than blue, you suit gold or bronze jewellery, your eyes are brown or hazel and you love the sun because it makes your skin golden. Those with cool undertones will have blue-ish veins, find silver jewellery the most flattering, have green, blue or grey eyes and burn easily in the sun.

Dark skin tones

Classic red tones tend to get lost on darker complexions, giving you more of a natural look than a statement lip. To combat this coat your lips with a layer of light brown lipstick or foundation to create a base coat that will make your red pop. You can pull off bold and bright reds with ease and deep and rich tones also play up your skin beautifully.
...with cool undertones: Usually one should pair their cool undertones with a cool colour but dark skin paired with warm toned lipsticks actually works super well. Avoid pastel or pink tones; they won’t blend well with your colouring. Try Catrice Ultimate Lip Colour in Temptation in Red or Palladio Velvet Matte Cream Lipcolor in Panne.
...with warm undertones: Choose vibrant reds for colour that really pops, or reds with a touch of plum in them that will show up brightly on your lips.  We recommend Catrice Ultimate Lip Colour in Hot n Spicy Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Are You Red-dy.

Fair skin tones

A bold red lip is a huge statement on a pale girl because of the big contrast in skin to lip colour. Because of this we’d recommend pairing your red lips with a relatively bare face, or a simple winged eyeliner for a retro look. It’s easy to look goth so, unless that’s the style you’re going for, avoid dark maroon shades of red.
...with cool undertones: Choose reds with pink-blue shades in them to make your complexion come to life. Raspberry, deep red wine, and berry-tinged colours will complement your cool tones perfectly but steer clear of anything too pink or orange; they’ll wash you out. Two of our faves are Essence Long Lasting Lipstick in All You Need is Red or Maybelline Colorshow Lipstick in Red my Lips.
...with warm undertones: Because you have a hint of yellow about your skin you can pull off warm and rich reds with touches of brown or bronze to them. You can also pull off fiery shades of orange-y reds! We love these shades - Maybelline Colorshow Lipstick in Red Siren and LOreal Color Riche Lipcolor in Coral Showroom.

Medium skin tones

Luckily for you medium skin tones can pull off pretty much any shade of red, although take note that blue-red tones tend to turn a bit pink on you. Your colouring means you don’t have to take it easy on the rest of your make up when rocking a red lip; go forth and contour all you like!
...with cool undertones: This is a rare combination as most medium-skinned people have warm undertones. If you have hints of blue about your complexions complement it with blue-red tones, like a purple berry shade. Look for Catrice Ultimate Stay Lipstick in Don’t Worry Be Berry or Essence Long Lasting Lipstick in On The Catwalk.
...with warm undertones: If your yellow undertones make you look a bit sallow choose brick reds or orange hues to offset this. Because you have so many flattering shades to choose from mix it up according to the occasion: super red for a special occasion, deep burgundy for evening drinks, and orange-tones for a fresh day look. A beautiful matte is Maybelline Color Sensational Bold Matte in Bold Red or try Rimmel’s The Only 1 Lipstick in Call Me.

Line it up

It’s all very well to have the perfect shade, but nothing stands out quite as much as badly applied red lip. Get your best shape by starting at the Cupid’s Bow of your lips. Use a lipliner (you can also use the pointed tip of your lipstick) to make an ‘X’ from each corner of the bow to the centre of your upper lip then line each side moving inwards from the corner of your mouth. Then line the centre of your bottom lip. Finish off both lips with two strokes on each side (coming from the corner of your mouth to the centre) and fill in the rest. Avoid the temptation to smack your lips together; this could smudge your shape. Dab some Physicians Formula translucent powder on top before reapplying in the same way and your red lips will stay put for hours.
If trying to work out your skin tone and undertone sounds a little bit too much (an experienced consultant would be able to help), try Revlon’s creamy Superlustrous Lipstick in Love is On. It claims to be what the beauty industry calls a universal shade meaning that it is flattering on all skin tones.
Or you can try this new trick from MAC MUA, Romero Jennings, who matches one lipstick to different skin tones by mixing it with concealer – very cool!
