Isn’t it just so easy to slap on lipstick and go? We’ve all done it. And maybe it didn’t look quite right be we had lipstick on - right? But with a few simple and lazy girl tricks to it’s just as easy to amp up your game to get drop dead gorgeous lips.

We’ve all seen them - those perfect photo-shopped lips you always drool over. But you think because you have dry chapped lips, have never found a colour which suits you or can’t quite master the art of lining or reshaping (yes - you can change their shape with a few simple tricks), you will never ever get those 'to die for' lips.

Well now you can. With a few simple tricks which can easily be built into your makeup routine, you too can be in lipstick heaven. Read on - my lovelies.

Trick #1: Exfoliate Away

Lipstick won’t stick well to flaky lips. If you don’t look after your pout, the colour will just clump in those dry areas giving you an uneven, blotchy finish. When you brush your teeth get into the habit of regularly using your toothbrush to lightly wipe clean any stray flakes. You can also use a clean mascara wand to do the same job. And if you have a bad case of dryness, try exfoliating while adding backing moisture with a DIY mix of coconut oil and sugar.

Pro Tip: Make the job easier by applying a little balm before exfoliation to give your lips some slip.

Trick #2: Prep Your Base

Most makeup pros use a lip primer to create the perfect base for more even colour. But your foundation or concealer can do exactly the same job. You want your lip colour to be the same as your face otherwise a lipstick shade will look different from what you expect. So if your lips are a little pinker or darker than the rest of your face, this is a must do step. Extend the concealer just beyond the edges of your lips and blend well.

Pro Tip:  Applying a clear makeup (or lip) primer around your mouth will stop bleeding.

Trick #3: Find the Right Colour

Ever noticed how some colours just don’t look right on you even though they look divine on a friend? Matching your lipstick shade to your underlying skin tone is the trick. You will have either a pink/blue, yellow/gold or neutral tone. To find out which one you are to get our free e-book on makeup artist secrets. Lip shades with the same underlying tones as your own play up your pout the best.

Pro Tip: Nail your nude shade every time by going one shade darker than your natural tone.

Trick #4: Line and Define

Many lipstick disasters start off with incorrect lining. Make sure that your lip liner matches or is a shade lighter than your lipstick. No dark lines – ever! It’s best to start off with a small cross to define your cupids bow, draw a line in the middle of your bottom lip, then work in from the outer edges of your lips. To avoid hard lines, use a slightly blunt tip to gently blur the edges of your liner into your lips. And to help your lipstick last longer, you can fill in the entire lip with your liner.

Pro Tip: Use a clear or nude lip liner to help define and lock the edges without any colour clashes.

Trick #5: Brush to Apply

Brushes are by far the best for the most even and precise application. Apply colour from the outer corners of the lips inwards. Bright shades and lip gloss are best applied inwards out to bring out the accents.  Want a more defined or smudged look? The type of brush you use can give you a different result. Concealer brushes give a much more opaque, sculpted look. Using a fluffy eyeshadow brush will leave you with a stained ‘just bitten’ effect.

Pro Tip: Reduce the intensity of your lip colour by applying a little to the inside of your lips then gently smudge it outwards with your ring finger.

Trick #6: Reshape your Lips

Want your lips to look fuller or smaller? Line them either just outside or inside your natural lip line. Then use highlighting and contouring techniques to change their shape. For fuller lips, use two shades of the same colour lipstick - a darker one on the outside and a lighter shade (or highlighter) in the centre. Blend well. Or just use gloss over the centre of your lips to catch the light. To reduce your lip size, go for dark lip shades and remove the shine. Matte lipsticks also do the trick (or dust translucent powder over your favourite shade).

Pro Tip: For a fuller bottom lip, use a bronzer or dark powder to contour just under your lower lip line.

Trick #7: Finish Off

Blot your mouth with a tissue after every application to set the base. Then use your trusty translucent powder to finish it off (and big bonus - give you longer wear). Dust a little directly over your lips or if you’d prefer, through a thin tissue layer to lock in your colour.  Stop your lip gloss smudging and smearing by using the same trick. Got any rough edges or wobbly lines? Use your concealer brush and a little cover up to clean up around the edges of your lip line.

Pro Tip: For a natural sheen, apply a little highlighter to your cupid’s bow and the centre of your lips.
