How to Survive Late-Night Holiday Parties Beautifully

'Tis the season to be merry, stay out late, have a few too many drinks and be a bit of a social butterfly. But how does one manage to do all this and still look fresh the next day?

In an ideal world, we could just lounge around in bed all day after a rough night to recover slowly, but life has other plans like lunch dates and Christmas shopping and we'd love to make it through the day without hearing every women's worst sentence: "You look tired!".

By staying hydrated, looking after your skin, avoiding horrible hangovers and faking your way to rested-looking eyes you can survive this sometimes stressful season, and look good while doing so!

Tip #1. Eyes, Eyes, Baby

When it comes to looking tired your eyes are the biggest giveaway. Puffiness, bloodshot peepers and dark under-eye bags won't do you any favours when you're trying to look fresh and rested.

  • Banish the dreaded bloodshot look that comes after a few too many drinks or simply a bad night's sleep with a splash of a refreshing eye drop solution. Eye drops are a seriously underrated beauty must-have; keep some in your handbag for times when you need a quick moisture injection for dry or irritated eyes. Try Systane Ultra Lubricant Eye Drops.
  • If you're one of those who struggle with eye drops, getting more product on your cheeks and eyebrows than in your actual eye, then go for a natural alternative: cucumber slices. Make sure they're fresh from the fridge as the both the cool temperature and the anti-oxidants in cucumbers will ease any inflammation.
  • While the ideal fix for tired and puffy eyes is a few more hours of sleep there are a few alternatives if you can’t afford this luxury. Keep two (used) green tea bags in the freezer at all times and whenever the puffiness hits simply place them under or on top of your eyes for 10-30 minutes.
  • Use an eyelash curler on bare lashes to get that bright-eyed and bushy-tailed look. A fresh face plus beautifully curled lashes shouldn’t even need mascara but if you can’t bear to go bare, try one that adds length instead of a thick volumising formula. This will lift eyes rather than add a heavy layer, making them look bigger and more ‘awake’! One of our faves is Rimmel Wonder'full Wake-Me-Up Defining Mascara.

Tip #2. Pamper Body and Soul

  • We all know how important it is to get our eight glasses of water in every day but this season make a concerted effort to actually take this advice to heart and drink them. You'll probably be drinking more alcohol than usual, followed by more cups of coffee than you're used to in an attempt to feel alive again the next day. Both of these are super dehydrating so try this: for every cup of alcohol or coffee you drink make sure to drink a cup (or two if you can manage) of water. When you come home after a night out force yourself to have another glass or two; it might mean more trips to the bathroom in the night but it will dramatically reduce your headache the next day.
  • A cup of coffee in the morning is a classic go-to for an early energy boost. Just try not to have any caffeine at night as you will struggle to get to sleep and a good night's rest is crucial to looking rested, duh! More and more of us, however, are trying to kick our coffee habit because we're feeling too reliant on it or getting the shakes after our fourth cup of the day. Some amazingly energising alternatives are green tea (better yet is matcha green tea, a type of green tea that uses the whole leaf and thus has more caffeine in it), ginseng, wheatgrass juice, liquorice tea, as well as smoothies that contain energy boosting ingredients like nuts, bananas and blueberries. Well & Good suggests some yummy options in 5 Morning Energy-Boosting Drinks to Make You Forget About Coffee.
  • Some people swear by a morning run to 'sweat out' their hangover but studies show that a high intensity workout such as running could actually be detrimental to your already fragile state. If being active makes you feel better, then opt for a gentle and cooling swim instead or try a few energising yoga poses. Some poses that will get your blood flowing, encourage your digestive system to speed up and ease pain are the legs-on-the-wall pose (lie on your back with your legs straight up against a wall), the cat and cow pose (alternate rounding and arching your back while on all fours) and child's pose (while kneeling place your forehead on the floor with your arms outstretched flat in front of you). If you haven’t already got one, Dis-Chem has some great value for money yoga mats from Sportmate.

Tip #3. Treat the Skin You're In

When you're tired or hungover your skin appears dull, grey and dry. Get your radiance back after a late night out or the morning of a big day where you didn't get quite enough rest with a few simple tricks (and a few miracle products). Our instinct is to cover an exhausted looking face with a layer of makeup, but sometimes this could make things worse. Rather fight off that fatigued look before you attempt to cover it up. Try these tips, like using moisturising products, sleeping on silk and keeping your skin spritzed, before you reach for the makeup bag.

  • The secret to radiant, healthy and plump skin is moisture. We've said it before and we'll say it again; start from the inside and drink water. If you find water boring to drink, add some cut up fruit, cucumber or mint to your water bottle to make it tastier while still being uber healthy.
  • Next let's add some moisture directly: use a creamy face wash like Johnson's and clean your face in small circular motions. This mini-massage will get blood flowing and add a natural glow to your skin. Follow with a serum, which is basically a more intense version of a moisturiser that contains your skin's favourite ingredient for creating moisture: hyaluronic acid. Two great serums to try are Bionike Proxera Face Serum and Vichy Liftactive Serum 10 Supreme.
  • If you have the time for it, a facemask is an absolute must (and if you're watching the clock, multi-task and pop it on while you're making breakfast/putting on your shoes/washing your hair). Try one that is ultra-hydrating like Skin Republic Collagen Infusing Mask to cheat the 8-hours of sleep look we're all after. A good-for-you face brightening option is Beauty Treats Green Tea Face Mask.
  • Silk pillowcases have been the secret weapon of beautiful and youthful looking women for years and it's time you tried one for yourself! Silk is less absorbent than other materials so your skin has more of a chance to rehydrate while you sleep, plus your rich night cream (we recommend Eucerin DermoDensifier) will be able to really get to work. The fabric also creates less friction with your skin, meaning no tell-tale red creases on your face when you wake up.
  • If your skin is still looking a little on the dull side use Garnier's BB or Almay's CC cream for light coverage with an illuminating and brightening finish. Blend a few dots of a concealer like Essence Soft Touch Mousse that matches your skin tone over your dark under-eye circles and any spots or blemishes with your finger. Because you should be aiming for a dewy complexion to lift your look, avoid mattifying powders, which also tend to flake on dry, tired skin.
  • Another handbag skin saver? A bottle of facial spritzer that you can apply throughout the day for a fresh hit of moisture. Make your own by adding equal parts cucumber juice and witch hazel into a portable travel spray bottle for a cooling and hydrating DIY spritz.
