Do you ever wish you could apply your favourite camera filter to your face in real life? Clever make up application is a step in the right direction and these unusual tricks and tips will get you looking flawless in no time!

Trick #1. Eyes wide open

We all want that youthful bright-eyed look but it's hard to achieve when you've had one too many late nights. If you've got time in the morning ice cubes, cucumber slices or even a teaspoon that you've chilled in the fridge can help to de-puff your peepers. Fake it with make up by investing in a white eyeliner pencil and a shimmery champagne-toned eye shadow. Apply the eyeliner pencil to your bottom waterline to cancel out redness, which makes eyes look instantly fresher, then apply a dot of shimmery eye shadow in the inner corner of each eye to open them up even more.

Pro tip: Accentuate your natural eye colour with complementary colours: blue eyes love browns or peachy shades, purple tones make green eyes pop, and blue-y shades like navy and cobalt bring out the best in brown eyed girls.

Try Michelle Ori Eye Pencil Hypoallergenic Extra Long Lasting in White, Maybelline Colorshow Mono Shadow in Sultry Sand or Catrice Liquid Metal Eyeshadow, We Are the Champagnes.

Trick #2. Change your face shape

We can thank Kim Kardashian for alerting the world to a makeup artists' best kept secret: contouring. You can tweak your face shape through the subtle art of face contouring, and all you need is either a duo contouring pencil or a contouring palette.

Wanting to create a thinner face? Take the dark shade of the duo contouring pencil and draw down the side of your face, from temple to jaw, blending it in with a foundation brush. Then, using the lighter shade of the pencil, draw a line down the centre of your face starting from hair line to mid chin area. Blend again with your foundation brush. This draws attention away from the wider part of your face which is across the cheek area.

Pro tip: Ombre hair (dark on top with light tips) gives the appearance of a slimmer face.

Try Catrice All Round Contouring Palette, Palladio The Definer Contour and Highlighter Dual Ended Crayon in Ashy Radiance, L.A. Girl Velvet Contour Stick.

Trick #3. Chin up

Another use for the wonder product that is your bronzer. After you've applied your foundation use your foundation sponge/brush to blend a line of bronzer along your jawline, creating the illusion of a chiselled chin area.

Try Barbara Hoffmann Professional or Silver Series Brushes (which are all hypoallergenic), Physicians Formula Argan Wear Glow Renewing Argan Bronzer, Essence Sun Club 2 in 1 Bronzing Powder No.10.

Trick #4. Hate the shape of your nose?

If your nose is broad and you would like to make it look longer, take a contouring pencil and draw a dark stripe on either side of the nose. With the lighter shade of the contouring pencil draw a line down the centre of nose, blending in thoroughly with your fingers or a foundation brush. If you have a long narrow nose, the opposite rules apply (light down the side of nose and a dark shade down the centre of your nose). You can also dab the dark concealer around the nostrils and bottom of nose, making your nose appear shorter!

Trick #5. Lack cheekbones? Here's how to fake them!

Cheat cheekbones in three quick steps. Sweep a highlighter just above your cheek bone, bronzer in the hollow of your cheek just below your cheekbones, and a touch of blush in between your highlighter and bronzer. Blend, blend, blend and you’ll be left with instant cheekbones.
Try Catrice Sun Glow Mineral Bronzing Powder in Golden Light, Revlon Powder Blush in Baby Pink, Palladio Baked Blush in Blushing.

Trick #6. Perfect brows for an instant make over

Create the perfect frame for your face by ensuring your brows are always on point. We're not all blessed with thick eyebrows like Cara Delevingne, but thanks to the enormous amount of brow products on counter sparse brows can easily be rectified. Eyebrow stencils are quick and convenient; just follow the directions on the packet for a flawless shape every time.

Pro tip: If using a brow pencil use downward strokes so that the hair covers the pencil marks, giving you a more subtle look.

Try Eylure Brow Taking Shape Shapers, Rimmel Brow this Way Brow Sculpting Kit in Mid Brown, L'Oreal Brow Artist in Dark Brunette.

Trick #7. Tired eyes transformed!

Drawing a cats eye is the perfect way of opening up the outer part of eye to deflect away from droopy or tired eyes. First apply a layer of light eye shadow to give the liquid liner something to stick to and to lift your lids. Drag your liner along your lash line, then draw a line from your outer corner up. The trick is to make sure your wing is in line with the outermost point of your eyebrow.

Pro tip: Unsteady hand? Apply the liner in a dot to dot line and then join the dots for an even line or use a piece of sticky tape as your guide!

Try Rimmel Scandaleyes Jumbo Liner in Black, Yardley Retractable Eye Pencil in Black, Maybelline Colossal Eyeliner in Black.
