How to Look Absolutely On-Trend on Your Big Night Out

16 Feb, 2017
By BeYou[tiful]
Most of us like to play it safe when it comes to day-to-day make up, making going out the best excuse to get a little experimental. You make sure you're wearing your hottest sneakers and your best Kardashian-esque dress - now make sure your makeup is on-trend too. Choose your favourite and try it three different ways for your big night out at the club or the next outdoor festival (just in time for Ultra!).

Trend #1. All That Glitters

Glitter has made a big come back in recent years and there are a number of ways to sprinkle it from big and bold glitter pieces to subtle yet sparkly strobing.

Sparkly Eyes
Skip the full lid of glitter, this look is about keeping it cool and understated. Coat your whole eyelid with one shade of your choice then lightly dip a thick brush into a glitter pot of the same or a complementary colour and simply blot it on top. If a few flecks land on your lower lash line no problem; this adds to the carefree look.

Luscious Lips
A touch of glitter on your lips will add an extra sparkle to your smile. After applying a layer of lippie coat your lips with a clear lip gloss (Maybelline's Color Show in White Glaze is a good option). Next dip your ring finger into your glitter and lightly pat on top of your gloss. For a more toned-down look only apply glitter to your inner lips, or mix glitter into your actual lip gloss tube.

Glow Strobe
Strobing is the glitzy cousin of contouring and adds an angelic glow to your whole face. Choose a highlighter with a super shimmery finish and blend well along your cheekbones. Try Palladio Baked Eyeshadow in Champagne.

Trend #2. Rose Coloured Eyes

Seen on all the runways at the moment, pink eyeshadows are the new nude that add a fresh glow to any complexion.

Blushed Eyes
Use your blush as eye shadow for a dramatic look as seen at Kenzo. Apply your blush to your cheeks and eyes then blend them together at the temple. Try the LA Beauty Brick Blush collection for different colour choices.

The New Smoky Eye
Put an on-trend winter twist to the classic smoky eye by replacing your brown and black tones with pink and deep reds. Apply the pink to the whole eye, blend the darker red into your crease and finish off with a smudge of kohl.

Peachy Lids
For minimalist girls who want to look on-trend and bright eyed try the wet lid look. Sweep a light peachy tone from Catrice's Absolute Rose Palette over your lids then use your finger to pat clear lip gloss over the whole lid. You can skip the lip gloss part but trust us, it'll give you an amazing glow.

Trend #3. Eyes Line Up

It's time to retire the trusty cat-eye and take your eyeliner in a new direction

Seriously Smudged
Perfectly formed wing tips are so 2016; this year is about bringing grunge back. Use a thick eyeliner pencil to roughly draw a line on your lid or under your bottom lashes then take a sponge and smudge it; imperfection is key. Palladio's Fifty Fifty dual ended liner gives you the option of both thin and thick lines all in one.

Graphic Eyes
This trend is all about getting inventive with your eyeliner, and that means anything goes. Try a double line of liner in two different colours (try Maybelline's Kajal in Orient Gold with black), a square wing tip or a bold glitter liner like Palladio Black Sparkle.

Underneath it All
Your eyeliner routine has been all about the lid but this season we're switching it up and focusing on the lower lash line. Keep a bare eye with just a bold stripe of black or colour underneath your eye for a look that's minimal but makes a statement. Essence's 2 in 1 Eyeliner pen will help you get this look.

Trend #4. Bold Lips

Lips are still the most important step when it comes to make up routines of the stars and this year is no different. Lips in 2017 are bold, multi-dimensional and anything but boring.

High Shine
Thanks to Kylie and her lip kits, matte lips have been all over your Instagram feed but now it's time to reintroduce a shiny lip gloss into your make up kit. Either choose a colour with a shiny finish or swipe a coat of clear gloss over your favourite regular lipstick. Our fave colours - LA Girl Glazed Lip Paint in Elude and Essence Glossy Stick in Luminous Rosewood.

3D Lips
Not only for your hair, ombre lips are having a moment. Get the multi-layered look by using one colour for your whole lip then dabbing a lighter tone on your inner lips and blending. Try mixing Maybelline's Color Sensational Lipstick with
Essence Long Lasting Lipstick in The Girl Next Door.

Berry Stained
Switch your bright reds for deep berry tones. With some trending shades being almost black there's no such thing as too dark here. Try Palladio Butter Me Up Sheer Color Balm in Glaze and LA Girl Matte Lip Gloss in Black Currant. Keep the edges of your lipstick feathered; a stark contrast to the HD edges we’ve been used to but it looks gorgeously effortless.

Trend #5. Hair Highlights

You don't have to be going to a festival to channel the festival chic look; it's more about carefree hair and the right accessories.

Long Hair Don't Care
Super long hair is the most coveted style right now, with lots of celebs rocking waist length tresses. For those of us who are struggling to get past that awkward shoulder-length go for clip in extensions, or take the plunge and invest in some more permanent extensions at your salon.

Plaited Buns
The messy topknot is a timeless style that oozes cool and this season we're updating it with a braid. Tie your hair into a high pony, plait your pony, wind it into a bun and secure in place with a few bobby pins. Lightly pinch your bun to get the messy look.

Jewelled Hair
Appearing all over the runways are chic and super pretty hair accessories with a twist. Wear something simple like four coloured hair clips to pull pack a side bang, a thin sparkly hair band with a top knot, or weave gilded floral tendrils into your braid.

Skin Art

For those of you going to Ultra, festivals are the one place where it is really cool to try out a fun temporary tattoo or an awesome henna design. Let loose your inner artist and play with stunning designs in shiny golds and silvers or rock it with a classy black or white henna statement.
