Why We Are All Absolutely Obsessed with Unicorns

They've been all over your Instagram feed for a while. Everyone is obsessed with the mysticism (and you have to admit absolute cuteness) of unicorns and mermaids. Whether it be aqua-hued mermaid toast, unicorn snot glitter gel, multi-coloured rainbow hair or shimmery holographic strobing, we can’t help ourselves from falling in love with the playfulness of this fun trend.

Shimmer, iridescence and glitter are the name of the game. But why the obsession with this magical explosion of happiness? Turns out it is to do with the escalation of stress which defines our existence nowadays. To cope, we are all seeking some whimsical fantasy world where we can escape (even just for a few minutes) from the chaos of our everyday lives. The recent obsession has been around a lot longer than you think - about 10 years. But it only really took off a few years back when mermaids become all the rage, offering us all a bit of fairy tale fantasy to help us escape from our chaotic world. Unicorns have been more of a slow burn but by the end of 2016, Google tells us that searches for unicorn makeup overtook their fishy counterparts. But they are both still very much part of our lives - and there are no signs of all the fantasy and fun flooding our loves abating.

Tooth and Nail cosmetics recently debuted a shimmery unicorn/mermaid eye palette combo. The top three shadows belong to mermaids and those on the bottom to our horned horse friends - so you can release your inner creativity for both fantasy filled looks.

And Urban Decay have just previewed this gorgeous holographic mascara which will be launched in about 3 months' time. The brands founder, Wendy Zomnir, recently posted a sneak peak of the product on her feed which has everybody guessing. Is it for mermaids, or just by looking at her drop dead fabulous lashes, a volumizing mascara which is waterproof?
