Want to Make Your Life Easier? Nail Your Signature Beauty Look

31 Aug, 2017
By Andie Reeves
Most days you hardly have enough time and energy to cook yourself breakfast, let alone put together an amazing look. We might feel like spending time on making ourselves look good is frivolous and a waste of time, but never underestimate the power that comes from feeling like you look great.

Simply liking what you see in the mirror as you rush out the house lifts your mood and gives you an extra confidence boost for the day. Think about the days where you do manage to get it right (when you actually have time to do a perfectly winged cat-eye or manage to not smudge your lipstick on your takeaway coffee), and know that it's possible to have that feeling every day.

The trick? Find what works for you and perfect it. We have all experimented with our looks in the past and made huge mistakes (think about that purple lipstick that is still in the back of your drawer, or that crimping iron you thought you would gets loads of use out of). It's time to totally eliminate any product or look that doesn't suit you or make you feel good, and find what does.

Think about what people compliment you on the most and play it up. Maybe people are always saying you have beautiful eyes or that they wish they had your hair. Choose your best features and make them pop so you can get those compliments all the time (not that we need other peoples' affirmation, but it sure does feel good).

Another factor you need to take into account when discovering your signature beauty routine is reality. Sure, you feel your best when you've had a fresh blow dry and are wearing a bold red lip, but realistically can you achieve that every morning?

There are about three different types of people when it comes to make up routine, which one are you?

How to Find Your Personal Style

Minimal
What you are all about: You can easily get ready in less than 10 minutes and your look is pretty natural. You admire women who get dolled up but every time you try it you just feel a bit overdressed and end up wiping your lipstick off in the car on your way out.

How to perfect your style: Firstly, accept that you are never going to be someone who spends longer than a couple of minutes on their beauty routine. This means don't get fussy haircuts that require styling (no, you shouldn't get a fringe!). Rather ask your hairstylist to give you a 'wash and go' cut that suits your hair's natural texture.  When it comes to beauty go for multi-use products that are easy to apply and save you time, like a BB Cream or a tint that you can use on your lips and cheeks.

Makeup and beauty must-haves: LA Girl Pro HD BB Cream; Olay Total Effects BB Cream; Garnier BB Cream for Combo Oily Skin; Dr Paw Paw Tinted Peach Pink or Ultimate Red Balm - a multipurpose balm with naturally fermented pawpaw for lips, cheeks and wherever you want to use it...

Classic
What you are all about: You wouldn’t describe yourself as high-maintenance (your boyfriend might) but you take a little longer to get ready in the mornings (at least 20 minutes). You love to feel polished and are happy to splurge on manis and pedis regularly. Looks you admire are old Hollywood beauties like Audrey Hepburn or Dita Von Teese and you would always choose a classic red lip over glitter eye shadow because you like to look timeless. You favour flattering over fashionable and know what works for your face.

How to perfect your style: Looking put-together isn't a rushed job so you need to commit to spending extra time on yourself in the mornings. Get your basic make up toolkit sorted. It should contain a primer, a good foundation, a brow pencil, a natural eye shadow palette and a statement red lipstick. Classic beauties like don't like to have a hair out of place, so it's likely you'll need to invest in a good straightener or curling wand. Protect your hair with a heat protectant spray before you style and use dry shampoo every few days so that you don't have to wash and heat style your hair as often.

Makeup and beauty must-haves: ghd Style Heat Protect Spray; Batiste Dry Shampoo and all the reds - Maybelline Colorshow Lipstick in Red Revolution,
Clarins Joli Rouge Lipstick in Joli Red and Revlon Superlustrous Lipstick in Love is On.

Trendster
What you are all about: Your friends are always asking you to do their make up for them because you've watched enough YouTube tutorials and own enough palettes to be a pro. You follow more beauty bloggers than friends on Instagram and always know exactly what's on trend in the world of beauty. You're happy to take a bit of extra time in the morning on your look because you know all the compliments and selfie opportunities will be worth it.

How to perfect your style: Start with a solid base of basics that you always use no matter the trend. This especially applies to foundation, because foundation trends come and go but your skin type doesn't change. Have your go-to products on hand so if your trend experimenting goes wrong you always have what you know works for you to fall back on. Just because blue eyeliner is having a moment doesn't mean you with your green eyes should try it out. If you don't already be sure to follow makeup artists on Instagram so that you can constantly update your beauty game.

Makeup and beauty must-haves: LA Girl Beauty Brick Eyeshadow in Neons, Essence Long Lasting Eye Pencil in Tu Tu Turquoise, Michelle Ori Eyeliner in Xanadu, LA Girl Gel Glide Eyeliner Pencil in Gold Mine and Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation.

How to Highlight Your Best Feature If Your Best Feature Is...

...Your eyes
Make your eyes really stand out by keeping the rest of your look toned down. Use colours that complement your natural eye colour (use our cheat sheet to discover yours). Did you know you can alter the shape of your eyes using just some artfully applied make up? Find out how here. Invest in a good quality mascara like Clarins Length and Curve and get into the habit of regularly applying eye cream at night to preserve your pretty peepers for years to come.

...Your lips
Lucky you if you’ve got naturally shapely lips that make everyone envious. Playing up your lips doesn't necessarily mean using a bold red lipstick to make them stand out; it's about shaping them to get them noticed even more. The general rule is if you have a bold lip keep it natural on your eyes and vice versa. For daytime use a sheer and sticky lip gloss (try Clarins Prodige Lip Gloss in Crystal) and when you want to feel a bit more dressed up use a shade that suits your skin tone.

...Your skin
Nothing feels better than when people ask you what your skincare routine is. If your flawless skin is your best feature you need to spend your money on a quality foundation as well as a brush (indulge in Cala’s Kabuki Brush) or beauty blender to apply it with. Discover what look suits you best and choose your product accordingly.

...Your brows
Bold brows should never be underestimated, they do, after all, frame your face. To keep your brows as your most complimented feature be sure to never miss a wax or threading appointment (every 4 to 6 weeks is perfect). The products you need in your arsenal are a good brow pencil, a spoolie brush (to brush your hairs with after using your pencil, giving you a natural look), and a brow gel like Rimmel’s Brow This Way Brow Styling Gel with Argan Oil (which holds your look perfectly in place all day).
