The Gorgeous New Makeup Look You Need to Try ASAP

We don't know about you - but we are so over smoky eyes. Sure - there were a lot of interesting twists this season but they have just become sooo boring. Same old, same old. Well - it seems like the rest of the world is in the same space. All the cool girls have switched to one of the prettiest, freshest looks around - two toned eyes - which is almost entirely led by multi-coloured liners.

For those of us who have worn a smoky eye and black liner for years, a whole bunch of brightly coloured liners can seem a little scary at first. But the look is a whole lot easier than you think.

Simply pick two colours for top and bottom lids - or layer the two on your top lid only. Or pick one coloured liner to accent top (or bottom) lids and pair with a soft wash of the same tone or complementary shadow.

And if you're a little unsure about going full on with multiple colours, try pairing a single bold shade with a more neutral black or white (a huge trend) or just use one colour to start.

Picking the right shade for you

The main thing you need to make sure of is that the colour works both with your eyes and skin.

This is when you turn to the trusty colour wheel which all makeup artists use for help. To pick the most flattering colour for you, choose the opposite or complementary colour to your eyes. For example, blue eyes work well with their opposite shades - reddish plums, pink and peachy tones. Brown eyed girls have more of a choice as they are more neutral. They do however work best with blues, purples and greens as well as similar toned warm shades like bronzes, golds, corals and burgundy. Of all the colours, purple is the most versatile and works with most eye colours - so if in doubt, pick this as your base colour.

Your skin tone can also determine whether you look great or gross in a certain colour. The best way to find out your skin tone is to check the veins on the inside of your wrist. If they are mainly green or olive then you are warm toned - you should choose colours with a yellow or gold undertone to best suit your skin. Cool toned girls have blue or purple coloured veins and should choose shades with a red or pink undertone.
Here's some inspo on the most gorgeous rainbow hued eyes...

Blue Moods

How it works: Blue hued eyes are the easiest 'go to' transition into colourful liners and are particularly well suited to brown eyed girls. If you like it quick and simple, sweep a bold cat eye across your lids. Pair with black for an elegant double line statement, or an ice blue underline to soften the look. Or complement with a soft wash of peach, copper or taupe shadow for a chic modern finish.

Our product picks: For the deep blues, Clarins Kohl Eye Pencil in Midnight Blue, Rimmel Magnif'Eyes Shadow and Kohl Liner in Dark Side of Blue and LA Girl Glide Gel Liner Pencil in Royal Blue, and a more subtle turquoise which suits warm skin tones, Essence Kajal Pencil in Feel the Maritime.

Green Envy

How it works: Emerald hues are best suited to brown eyes or any other colour with a green fleck - like hazel, blue or grey. Make your eyes really pop with a bold green underline and add a touch of flair with complementary gold, bronze or silver shadows. Or draw a sparkly solid line on a clean eye for a bold dramatic fashion statement. If you can’t find a glitzy pencil, layer some cosmetic glitter on top of your liner.

Our product picks: Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Eyeliner Trio for Green Eyes and BioNike Defence Colour Eye Pencil in Vert.

Metallic Magic

How it works: Yes - the old faves like gold and silver are still around, but metals are now all grown up with the intro of the very on trend copper and rose gold hues. While still dramatic when worn alone, the latest is to pair them with unexpected colours like lavender, blueberry and a grey-tinged taupe. For more drama, use a simple black liner to anchor your metallic stripe across your lash line.

Our product picks: LA Girl Glide Gel Liner Pencil in Gold Mine, Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Liquid Metal Eyeliner Trio in Universal and Michelle Ori Liquid Eyeliner in Bronze. Use the metal which best suits your skin tone - gold and bronzy shades for warm girls and silver for cool skins. Rose gold will work for both.

Pink Pops

How it works: Many of you may still be steering shy of this pretty trend but it’s actually a lot easier than you think. The bonus - it works with most eye colours.  Start off with a simple line along your top lashes and open up your eyes with a touch of white or nude on your lower waterline. Then play with some complementary hues like a soft lilac or tone-on-tone deeper pink reds on your lids. Add some gloss and sparkle to bring out your inner mermaid.

Our product picks: Time to raid your lip collection. Find a pink which best suits your skin tone otherwise it will look garish. Try a strong fuchsia like Rimmel Exaggerate Auto Lipliner in Pink a Punch or the baby pink Essence Velvet Stick Matt Lip Colour in Nude Hero.

Posh Purple

How it works: Another universal colour which pairs well with most eye colours. Softer eye tones should stick with a sheer wash of lilac across their lash line or pair a deep purple liner with a lavender, pink or creamy metallic turquoise shadow. The deeper your eye colour, the more drama your inner artist can create. Offset a deep purple underline with a black cat eye and finish off with inner corner white highlights.

Our product picks: Rimmel Exaggerate Smoke ‘n Shine Auto Gel Eyeliner in Purple Craze, LA Girl Glide Eye Pencil in Paradise Purple, LA Girl Glide Gel Liner Pencil in Black Amethyst and Palladio Liquid Eyeliner in Amethyst.

Scarlet Flush

How it works: It all started with the red eyeliner trend which was admittedly a little scary and could only be worn very carefully. This has now morphed into the very wearable burgundy which most of us can carry off. Most elegant when worn as a simple cat eye, you can also add a wash of gold, bronze or soft pink on the lids to lift the look. Or experiment with sky blues on the opposite side of the colour wheel for a high impact contrast.

Our product picks: LOV The Smoky Affair Dramatic Eye Pencil in Majestic Athena, Rimmel Exaggerate Auto Lipliner in Under My Spell, LA Girl Lipliner Pencil in Plum and Essence Lip Liner in Be a Game Changer.

White Lights

How it works: The trusty white liner has long been used to tightline or buff the inner corners and lower lids to open up the eyes. Now the trend has extended to the top lids where it is paired with either black or one other on-trend shade. Try an elegant two-toned liner look by using white together with lilac, orange or baby pink.  Pro tip: dark skinned girls should use a softer nude liner to blend more seamlessly into their skin.

Our product picks: LA Girl Endless Auto Eye Liner in White, Essence Long Lasting Eye Pencil in Silky Nude and Palladio Precision Eyeliner in White.

Citrus Sunsets:

How it works: Sunset eyes burst onto the makeup scene a few seasons back and are still going strong. Citrus tones look stunning on an olive or dark skin and with brown or hazel eyes. Because the shades are so strong keep the line simple - layer it on top of black to play up the contrasts. Or choose shadows which mimic those perfect sunset hues like soft oranges, reds and purples.

Our product picks: For the oranges, choose a lipstick like Maybelline Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick in Craving Coral and Palladio Matte Lipstick in Coral and apply with Cala's Fine Eyeliner Brush. You can also use multi coloured eyeshadow palettes like the gorgeous LA Girl Beauty Brick Eyeshadow in Neons. Just wet your eyeliner brush to give you more colour intensity, apply your line and voilà – you not only have yellow and orange but all the colours you need for the season!
